variety of ecosystems, from lush <strong>tropical rainforests<\/strong> in the Western Ghats to <strong>deciduous forests<\/strong> in the central regions and<strong> temperate forests<\/strong> in the Himalayas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India&#8217;s forests are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including several <strong>endangered species.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>National Forest Policy of 1988 and the Forest Conservation Act of 1980<\/strong> reflect the government&#8217;s commitment to sustainable forest management and conservation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These policies aim to address issues such as <strong>deforestation, biodiversity loss, and land degradation.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Despite these efforts, the forests face ongoing challenges, including <strong>illegal logging, encroachment, and the impacts of climate change.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts from <strong>government bodies, local communities, and environmental organisations<\/strong> to ensure the protection and sustainable use of India&#8217;s valuable forest resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b967601ed9a25dc2fc5260ff4b48e10a\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Issues_Related_to_Forests_in_India\"><\/span><strong>Issues Related to Forests in India<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Although India has rich and varied forest resources, due to a lack of scientific planning, indigenous methods of exploitation, and mismanage\u00adment, its annual yield is meager.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, the productivity level per hectare of forests is 3.9 cu. m. of wood per annum in France, 1.8 cu. m. in Japan, and 1.25 cu. m. in the U.S.A., and only 0.5 cu. m. in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The specific problems of Indian forests are the following:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-39f3b1c98247a7841a99daabc7eb1a12\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Low_Forest_Cover\"><\/span><strong>Low Forest Cover<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The forest cover in India is only <strong>21.0 per cent, which is against the world average of about 35 per cent.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As recommended in the <strong>National Forest Policy of India 1988, <\/strong>the desired forest area <strong>should be 33 per cent (25 per cent in plains and 60 percent in hilly regions)<\/strong> of the country&#8217;s total geographical area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most of the forests of India are not gregarious, which creates problems with their exploitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, <strong>Teak, sal, bamboo, pines, oak, deodar, fir, spruce and larch are some exceptions.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About 40 per cent of the total forest area is not easily accessible. In about 50 per cent of the total forest area, tribals have been given the rights of free grazing and cutting fuelwood and timber for their personal consumption. This right is often misused, leading to the destruction of forest areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-62283131016181ec0806a4d5d8e635f9\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Open_Grazing\"><\/span><strong>Open Grazing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The grazing of cattle, sheep, and goats, especially in hilly and mountainous areas, by the local people is causing extensive damage to the Indian forests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nomadic tribes like <strong>Bakarwals, Bhutias, Gaddis, Gujjars, and Lepchas<\/strong> practice transhumance (seasonal migration), which damages forest ecosystems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5c51f170eedf2d928b10bdb28112f042\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shifting_Cultivation\"><\/span><strong>Shifting Cultivation<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tribals in the hilly and mountainous areas where rainfall is <strong>more than 100 cm generally practice shifting cultivation (Jhuming).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The increasing population pressure has reduced the Jhum Cycle to only five years in many parts of <strong>Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consequently, the forests do not have sufficient time to regenerate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c3bca9dd8fbdc141342aa207fb3384bf\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Growing_Demand_for_Agricultural_Land\"><\/span><strong>Growing Demand for Agricultural Land<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With the tremendous increase in population during the last 50 years, the<strong> demand for cereals and agricultural raw materials<\/strong> has increased significantly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consequently, the forest area has been brought under cultivation leading to a continuous shrinkage of the forest area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-247033911fcbb919b5568e9d26853a6b\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Urbanisation_and_Industrialisation\"><\/span><strong>Urbanisation and Industrialisation<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fast urbanisation and industrialization<\/strong> in forests and hilly areas are also important causes of forest degradation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Roads have been rapidly expanded in the Himalayas and other forest areas, exposing valuable forests to tourists and pleasure-seekers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c135f51f3a167bce7b6f2adcdd920854\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Construction_of_Multi-Purpose_Projects\"><\/span><strong>Construction of Multi-Purpose Projects<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The construction of reservoirs of big dams like <strong>Bhakra-Nangal, Rihand, Hirakud, Tehri, Sardar-Sarovar, etc.,<\/strong> has resulted in the submergence of large forest tracts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-16db97686431eb01e0b42ed090686e32\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Commercial_Activities\"><\/span><strong>Commercial Activities<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Commercial activities like<strong> resin extraction, mining, quarrying, oil extraction, plantation development, and orchard development<\/strong> have also led to large-scale deforestation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unfortunately, <strong>paper mills and sawmills <\/strong>have been located in forest areas, accelerating the process of deforestation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-828b45c71585cc7320e37c4a20acd76c\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Measures_to_Conserve_Forests_in_India\"><\/span><strong>Measures to Conserve Forests in India<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Forests and wildlife are vital to the quality of life and environment in the subcontinent. Conserving forest resources is imperative for our survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the steps that can go a long way in making forests healthy and sustainable are as under:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0675a5c938fd8dce66d524948a40d7a6\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Increase_Area_of_Forest_Plantation\"><\/span><strong>Increase Area of Forest Plantation<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expanding forest plantations by utilising vacant or unused lands, wastelands, and marginal lands &#8211; such as along <strong>roadsides, railway tracks, contours, and boundaries,<\/strong> as well as on lands unsuitable for agricultural use\u2014can yield significant benefits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Planting trees outside designated forest areas will alleviate pressure on forests for <strong>timber, fodder, and fuel wood.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Additionally, reforestation efforts are needed to restore deforested regions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a2fca41fe1f66177114653979788d1aa\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reduce_Population_Growth_and_Increase_per_Capita_Incomes\"><\/span><strong>Reduce Population Growth and Increase per Capita Incomes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reducing population growth is pivotal in reducing deforestation in developing countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With a reduced population, an increase in per capita income and literacy rates will occur, which will relieve pressure on the remaining forests for new human settlements and land use change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6c9f0483c0365129bd542be4c3bac702\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reducing_Emissions_from_Deforestation_and_Forest_Degradation\"><\/span><strong>Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many international organisations, including the UN and the World Bank, have begun to develop programs to curb deforestation, mainly through Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), which uses direct monetary or other incentives to encourage developing countries to limit and\/or roll back deforestation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Due to India\u2019s efforts, REDD changed to REDD+ in COP13 in Bali.
